System Architecture Overview
The FAIR accelerator control system is implemented as an object-oriented decentralized distributed system. It is based on a modular design with well defined interfaces. This allows breaking down the project in interconnected work packages that can be implemented independently. In a logical view, the system has three hierarchical layers of equipment communicating through the Accelerator Network: At the equipment level, the various actuators, sensors and measurement devices are interfaced to the control system through different types of front-end equipment control computers. At the heart of the control system, powerful Linux servers host the databases and run the Services and Applications. At the control room level, consoles running the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) allow machine operators to control and optimize the beams and supervise the state of key industrial systems.
