Stochastic cooling (collector ring)
Stochastic cooling system is foreseen in the collector ring.
Stochastic cooling has to handle a lot of (rather simple) elements

Many many sub-components (see attached talk),
most of them will be attached to control system by same type of interfacing, the "Power Supply and Control Unit".
This power upply and control unit presently ofers a RS232 interface. However, RS232 may be to slow for proposed data volume, therefore ethernet connection (plain TCP/IP) is envisaged.
Part of stochastic cooling for CR will be 8 motors which have to be driven simultaneously. For these motors a separate control exists (with microprocessor) which is connected to a local industrial PC. Motors expect a HW trigger singnal for start (most likely one signal for all motors)

- interfacing to most of the components will be by 'Power Supply and Control Units'
- one of such units provides on the equipment side power upplies for stochastic cooling equipment, and several (eight?) RS232 to connect to the stochastic cooling equipment
- For interfacing to the control system, one connector is foreseen.
- Presently, for connection to the control system one RS232 connector is provided
- Presumably, this will be replaced by a network connection. The Power Supply and Control Unit (which is equipped with an internal mcroprocessor) then will provide a TCP/IP connection via Ethernet.
- For the first stage in the CR (the 1-2 GHz cooling system, a 2-4 GHz system will come later) 17 Power Supply and Control Units are foreseen
- Some of the equipment will have to be operated in ramped mode. E.G. attenuation has to vary during the cooling process. For such ramped equipment presently is proposed:
- Ramps will be preloaded. Loading will take about 100 ms.
- For execution a start trigger is needed. A hardware signal is expected (which should be generated by the timing system). The start trigger will be needed once per cooling process, which is once per injection of new beam.
- The stochastic cooling system will be equipped with two off the shelf measurement systems:
- One network analyser and one spectrum analyser will be integrated
- Both probably will be interfaced by an LXI network interface
- Presently similar equipment is already used in the ESR
- The ESR measurement equipment is installed in the main control room
- For the CR the equipment will be installed in the field, remotely controlled by network
- Interfacing of the 32 power amplifiers
- Will directly provide a RS232 interface (will not be connected to a Power Supply and Control Unit)
- Control will have to cover ratehr simple functionality only, like power on/off and status read back
- Fast linear stepper motors
- will be used to adjust pick-up plates to the beam
- 2 PCs foreseen, one per pick-up tank
- will have to be varied according to cooling process (open at injection, close to shrinking beam during cooling process)
- will be controlled by local PCs, which connects motors via EtherCat
- local PC will run Windos, currently Windows-XP
- Control system interfacing will be via this local PC
- Stochastic cooling will have a local cryo system at the pick-up location. This cryo system will be controlled locally. However, some status signals should be read by teh control system.
